King Charles made a surprise return to Lancaster Castle, marking his first official visit to the site since his coronation.
King Charles took part in the centuries-old Ceremony of the Keys as he made a surprise visit.
On Monday, June 9, Charles made his first visit as monarch to Lancaster Caster, receiving a warm welcome from cheering schoolchildren and a military band.
“It was wonderful to meet so many members of the local community at Lancaster Castle this morning!” read a post shared to the official royal family Instagram account, alongside a reel of smiling faces and Union Jack flags.
As Duke of Lancaster, the 76-year-old monarch was handed the symbolic keys to the historic site, continuing a royal tradition dating back to Queen Victoria’s reign. His late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, last received the keys during her own visit in 2015.
Inside the castle grounds, Charles mingled with local artisans and businesses, including cheesemakers, wool producers, and furniture craftsmen, all proudly displaying goods rooted in regional heritage.
Later, the King attended a reception where he met with charity volunteers and community leaders.
