Princess Anne made a surprise visit to Barbados over the weekend, a move that carried a lot of symbolic weight for the Monarchy.

According to Buckingham’s Palace official statement shared on social media on Tuesday, June 3, the 74-year-old royal met with President Sandra Mason and Prime Minister Mia Mottley during a packed diplomatic trip over the weekend.

“Thank you to everyone who welcomed The Princess Royal to Barbados this weekend!” the statement read.

Although Barbados removed the British monarch as head of state in 2021, the weekend visit was seen as a show of enduring partnership.

“Barbados proudly transitioned to a parliamentary republic in 2021. And yet, the bonds between our countries remain strong,” declared acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Sandra Husbands per Barbados Today.

The visit, which wasn’t publicly announced in advance, marked the Princess Royal’s first return to the island since 1966.

Her engagements included commemorating the Monarch’s official birthday (second Saturday of June) at the British High Commission and attending the Duke of Edinburgh’s Commonwealth Study Conferences — a program she has led since 2011 after assuming the role from her late father Prince Philip.

The Princess also visited the Barbados Defence Force and volunteered at a field medical hospital at Paragon Base in Christ Church.
