The Princess of Wales is reported to have given her eldest son a charming nickname even before his birth. Prince George, the first of Prince William and Princess Kate’s three children, was born in London on July 22, 2013.

At the time, the young royal’s gender was kept secret until his arrival. Royal expert Katie Nicholl revealed in 2013 that Kate had an inkling she was expecting a son.

Nicholl wrote for Vanity Fair: “Although Kate apparently suspected it was a boy and had her heart set on Alexander, they had not yet decided what to call their firstborn.”

Kate allegedly referred to her unborn child affectionately, with Nicholl adding: “Kate reported to have affectionately referred to her bump as ‘our little grape’ while she was pregnant, and there was a flurry of betting on possible names.”

The Palace announced Kate’s first pregnancy in December 2012, during which she suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition that recurred in her subsequent pregnancies with Princess Charlotte, now nine, and Prince Louis, now six. Kate gave birth to George naturally at the Lindo Wing in London, and the proud parents introduced their newborn son to the press on the hospital steps, reports the Express.

Reflecting on the arrival of George, Princess Kate shared her memories with Giovanna Fletcher on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, saying: “It was utterly extraordinary, actually. And he was very sweet. And also sort of relieved that he was happy, healthy boy.”
