General Hospital Actress, Elizabeth MacRae, Passes Away At 88
Actress Elizabeth MacRae, best known for her roles on General Hospital (GH) and Gomer Pyle: U.S.M.C, among other credits, has died at the age of 88. She passed away in her hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina on Monday, May 27.
Elizabeth MacRae’s Television Legacy
Elizabeth was cast in her first TV role, playing a witness for the courtroom drama, The Verdict is Yours. As the next several years past, MacRae increased her presence on television, cast in sitcoms and dramas and appearing in various popular shows from the ‘60s and ‘70s, including, Hawaiian Eye, 77 Sunset Strip, The Andy Griffith Show, Surfside 6, Death Valley Days, The Fugitive, and I Dream of Genie – just to name a few.
One of her most famous roles was playing Lou-Ann Poovie, Gomer’s girlfriend, in Gomer Pyle: U.S.M.C, in the show’s final three seasons (1966 to 1969).
She had a total of 15 appearances on the show, which began in 1966 with an episode titled, “Love’s Old Sweet Song”. In fact, she was originally signed on to only work the one show, but impressed the producers so much, that the decision was made for her to stick around for longer.
In addition, Ms. MacRae was involved with a handful of movies, and her film credits include Everything’s Ducky, Goldfish Bowl, The Incredible Mr. Limpet, and The Conversation, which was directed by Frances Ford Coppola and starred Gene Hackman.
Elizabeth MacRae’s Impact On Daytime Drama
MacRae first landed in the world of daytime drama by appearing on GH, playing the role of Meg Baldwin. She debuted on the soap in August 1969 and continued until her character’s passing in 1973. She also had other roles on Days of Our Lives (1976, 1977), All My Children (1980), Another World (1980, 1989), Guiding Light (1983), and Search for Tomorrow (1985).
Ms. MacRae is survived by her five stepchildren, Alex Halsey Topper, Cate Halsey, Hugh Halsey, Peter Halsey, and Terry Halsey.
